About & Cutting Policy

Foundry41 is an independently maintained web directory produced in the tradition of the editorial periodical. It exists to provide readers with a structured, human-reviewed reference to the contemporary web — organised by subject, free to browse, and open to submissions from site operators across every listed department. The directory was assembled on the principle that the web, for all its abundance, is difficult to navigate without the guidance of a considered hand. Search engines surface what is popular; Foundry41 attempts to catalogue what is present and accessible across 22 departments, from the industrial to the recreational. Each of the 831 listings in the directory has been reviewed for domain stability and categorical relevance before inclusion. The editors do not rank listings within sections, nor do they accept payment for placement. Every site appears on the same footing, listed alphabetically within its department. Foundry41 takes its name from the craft tradition of type founding — the making of the individual letters from which pages are set. It is an appropriate metaphor for a directory: each listing is a single piece of type, unremarkable alone, but part of a composed and legible whole. The directory is updated on a rolling basis as new submissions are reviewed and approved. Site operators wishing to appear in Foundry41 are welcome to submit via the form provided; readers with corrections or queries may use the same channel.
